How to Get Your Website Seen by AI: A Practical Guide to AI Visibility

More and more buyers don't start with a Google search anymore. They ask an AI: "Who are the best web development companies for startups?" or "What's the best CRM for a small real estate agency?" ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews answer in a few sentences — and mention only a handful of businesses.

If your business isn't one of them, you're invisible to a growing share of customers. The good news: AI visibility is built on things you can control. Here's how.

How AI tools decide what to show

AI assistants get information about your business in two main ways:

  1. Training data — what the model learned from the public web when it was built
  2. Live search — many assistants now browse the web in real time and cite their sources

In both cases, the AI can only recommend what it can access, understand, and trust. That gives us three jobs.

Job 1: Make sure AI can access your site

Don't block AI crawlers by accident

Check your robots.txt. Some security plugins, CDN bot settings, or templates block crawlers like GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. If they're blocked, those assistants can't read your site.

Render content on the server

Many AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. If your website only shows content after JavaScript loads — common with single-page apps and some AI-built sites — crawlers may see an empty page. Server-side rendering or static generation fixes this.

Keep the site fast and error-free

Slow pages, broken links, and server errors make crawlers give up. A clean sitemap.xml helps them find every page.

Job 2: Make your site easy for AI to understand

Add an llms.txt file

llms.txt is an emerging standard: a plain-text summary of your business at yourdomain.com/llms.txt — what you do, your services, key pages, and FAQs. It gives AI tools a clean, reliable overview instead of making them piece it together from your navigation and footers.

Use structured data

Schema.org markup (JSON-LD) tells machines exactly what's on a page: your Organization, Services, Products, FAQs, Articles, and Reviews. It's invisible to visitors but highly readable for search engines and AI.

Write clearly, with direct answers

AI tools love content that answers questions plainly. Use headings phrased as real questions, answer in the first sentence or two, then go deeper. Include specifics: prices, timelines, locations, technologies, and numbers.

Say what you do — everywhere — consistently

Your homepage, About page, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and directory listings should describe your business the same way. Inconsistent descriptions confuse AI models.

Job 3: Make your business trustworthy to AI

Publish genuinely useful content

Detailed guides, cost breakdowns, comparisons, and case studies are exactly what AI tools cite. Thin, generic content gets ignored. (A steady content plan helps — we cover that in how to keep your website fueled with fresh content.)

Get mentioned on other websites

AI models weigh what others say about you: reviews on Google and Clutch, industry directories, guest articles, podcasts, press mentions, and community discussions. Each credible mention strengthens your visibility.

Show real expertise

Author names, team bios, real project examples, certifications, and client results all signal that a real, experienced business stands behind the content.

Keep information fresh

Out-of-date prices, old service lists, and stale blog posts reduce trust. Review key pages regularly and keep dates current.

How to check your AI visibility today

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude questions your customers would ask — "best [your service] in [your city]" — and note who gets mentioned
  2. Ask directly: "What do you know about [your business]?" and check for errors
  3. Open your robots.txt and confirm AI crawlers aren't blocked
  4. Check whether your site has an llms.txt and structured data
  5. Test a key page with JavaScript disabled — if the content disappears, crawlers may not see it either

How Brahmweb helps

We run AI visibility audits and implement the fixes: crawler access, server-side rendering, llms.txt, structured data, content strategy, and technical SEO — so both search engines and AI assistants can find and recommend you. We've done the same for our own site.
